Common Loon

These magnificent birds are a Canadian icon. Anyone who camps near lakes love the lonesome cry of these birds. The loon actually graces one side of our dollar coin and therefore the coin has been dubbed "the loonie". They're actually very large birds although they look small in the water. They sit very low in the water with their legs well back for powerful propulsion through the water. They also have near solid bones (most birds have hollow bones) and so have less buoyancy. They are natural divers and fish in this manner. I took quite a few shots of these birds as there was a family of 5 on the lake we were at. However, most didn't turn out worth crap as the light was horrible and they refused to come too close to me. I did manage to get some quite amazing shots of them taking to flight which will follow this posting for the next couple days. Stay tuned!! These birds are like 747's when they take off.
