I've finally read up a bit on these little birds. They're actually the Common Red Poll, latin name Carduelis flammea, and are of the finch family. They actually winter here and nest further north. They constantly feed as they are always in danger of hypothermia.
We've got some absolutely wonderful warm weather here right now... it's actually been hovering around 0^C. AND they've been saying as high as +6C today!!! Bring on that sunscreen folks I'm goin' to the beach!!!! Have a great weekend, kids!! I intend on it as it's a long weekend here for Family Day.
Thank you everyone for all the comments and response to my red polls.
Just tell me what you think. I'm a big girl.... I won't cry for long. ;-)

The images are all lovely. I think anyone of them would be excellent on a wintry Christmas card. They are certainly chubby enough to have been feeding all the time.

Hi Amy. They are such a beautiful, colorful little bird. My finches have orange breasts and although much the same shape not quite a beautiful as these Red Polls. I agree with Michael, they would be wonderful on a Christmas card. I'm glad your weather is warming up, but I don't think you need the sunscreen just yet. ;D

This is a great composite show. Your "polls" are beautiful little birds. There was something called a "house finch" in Kentucky that when breeding would have that red breast coloration; these look similar. Thanks for doing some research.
